Description

A portion of the Orion Constellation. After many weeks of clouds and rain, and being away in Norway, I was finally able to do a little astrophotography.

In this picture we can see the three belt stars: Alnitak on the left, Alnilam in the middle, and Mintaka on the right. Above Alnitak is a gaseous region called Messier 78 or NGC 2068 which is a reflection nebula.

Below these stars is the famous Orion Nebula, Messier 42 (NGC 1976) and is located in Orion's sword. This nebula is some 24 light years across and, like Messier 78 above, is partially a reflection nebula. The bight star in the bottom left is called Saiph and is a supergiant located some 650 light-years away.
